The Life and Times of Kadambini Ganguly: Revisiting the renaissance of women education and empowerment in India
Kadambini Ganguly (18 th July 1861- 3 rd October 1923) As we celebrate 75 years of Independence of our country, let us revisit the life of an extraordinary woman who led the struggle for women education and empowerment in modern India. Kadambini Ganguly was the first woman physician practicing western medicine in South Asia. Her journey to become one of the first woman graduates in whole British empire, then a physician in the 19 th Century, is nothing but inspiring for all the young women of India. Born on 18 th July 1861 Kadambini, was born & brought up in a progressive environment under the roof of Braj Kishore Basu in Bhagalpur. Her father, Braj Kishore Basu, an active Bramho Samaj reformer was committed to women emancipation and had set up an early organisation for women in Bhagalpur named ‘ Bhagalpur Mahila Samiti’ in 1863.
