The Life and Times of Kadambini Ganguly: Revisiting the renaissance of women education and empowerment in India

  Kadambini Ganguly   (18 th July 1861- 3 rd October 1923) As we celebrate 75 years of Independence of our country, let us revisit the life of an extraordinary woman who led the struggle for women education and empowerment in modern India.  Kadambini Ganguly was the first woman physician practicing western medicine in South Asia. Her journey to become one of the first woman graduates in whole British empire, then a physician in the 19 th  Century, is nothing but inspiring for all the young women of India. Born on 18 th  July 1861 Kadambini, was born & brought up in a progressive environment under the roof of Braj Kishore Basu in Bhagalpur. Her father, Braj Kishore Basu, an active Bramho Samaj reformer was committed to women emancipation and had set up an early organisation for women in Bhagalpur named ‘ Bhagalpur Mahila Samiti’ in 1863. A year that sent us a decade back.. The picture above is just a funny way to convey the seriousness of the situation we are facing right now. . . One year has passed since we had world's biggest lockdown, people have migrated on foot to their native places, many have lost their family, friends and livelihood. Many of us had to begin again to support themselves and their families.  . . I don't need to quote statistics to convince ourselves about the loss we suffered as a nation and as human beings. . . We have seen the best of humanity in form of people  who emerged as a saviour for the marginal and the last person on the trail and those who ensured that healthy and safe meals reached lakhs of people in need no matter how far or difficult it may be. . Strengthening the Vulnerable Voices of India: A Long Walk to Gender Equality

   With a score of 42 on  the SDG India index 2019 we are not even halfway on the way to achieve Goal 5 1 . An international Campaign ‘ 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence ’  was launched on  25 th Nov 2020,   the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women   by the United Nations to raise awareness about gender-based violence, one of the focus areas of Sustainable Development Goal  (SDG)  5: Gender Equality.  Goal 5 is a global commitment to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls through imparting education, eradicating discrimination and violence against women, giving equal rights, economic resources and access to property ownership to women.  In the light of recent barbarity, indifference and outrage over  to the Hathras gangrape victim and escalated cases of domestic violence (600/million in UP alone) during pandemic 2 , i t becomes necessary to reflect on how promising a...
